We Won…

Back near the start of 2015 I had the notion of entering my marshmallows for a Great Taste Award (GTA). I’d just started Mallamour a couple of months beforehand so I wasn’t a very established company and I was keen to get some industry recognition for my marshmallows in addition to the amazing feedback that I was getting from people who were trying them.  The yearly Great Taste Awards are a pretty big deal to people in the food and drink industry; from large producers all the way down to small artisan producers like me.  To read more about the Great Taste Awards, click here.

I chose our Rose and Pistachio marshmallows as my contender and submitted the entry to the to judges in April.  I didn’t think about it too much over the next few months; I had other fish to fry (and marshmallows to make).  But I won’t pretend that I wasn’t nervous as the award date came closer.  I really, really wanted to win this and I was keen to know what a panel of respected food professionals thought of my little marshmallows.  I wasn’t exactly sure how their opinion would affect me but I didn’t want to feel the disappointment of not winning.

The GTA email finally arrived on 2nd August to say that the results were in.  I was over the moon to see that my entry had been awarded with 1 star.  For me, it was extra confirmation that my marshmallows were way beyond ordinary.  Here’s what the judges had to say about them…

Generously sized marshmallows that have visible pieces of pistachio within. The rose flavour comes through immediately. The pistachio has good flavour and the distribution of pistachio is also well judged. Lovely squidgy texture and a great example of marshmallows.

So there you have it.  I’ve been asked if having the award has made a big difference to my business.  It’s not an easy question to answer.  I think the main benefit is that it shows that I have faith in what I produce and that I’m happy to receive feedback.  The award has opened up doors for me that may have otherwise remained closed.  Hopefully, it also sends a message to people who are thinking about buying my marshmallows that I’m serious about what I do and that when they make a purchase from me, they’ll be getting quality that meets or exceeds their expectations.  Ultimately, I’m proud to have won an award and feel inspired to continue creating great marshmallows.
